PoE Mini UPS

Power over Ethernet, or PoE, sends power and data over the same network cable, so a camera, an access point, or a phone can run from the switch without a separate power adapter at each device. That elegance creates a single point of failure: when the switch loses power, every PoE device on it loses power at once. A PoE mini UPS addresses that concentration by keeping the switch, or the PoE source, running on battery power, so the whole PoE installation rides through the cut together.

The PoE case is best understood as a switch case. The devices at the end of the cables matter less than the switch in the middle, because the switch is the power source for all of them. Protecting the switch protects the cameras and access points behind it, while protecting a single camera leaves the rest dark. Buyers should therefore start from the switch: its power draw, its PoE budget, and the number of powered devices, and size the backup for the switch load rather than for any single device.

PoE budgets deserve care, because a switch power figure and a PoE budget figure are different things. The switch itself draws power to run, and on top of that it delivers power to its PoE devices up to its budget. The total backup load is the sum of the two, and a UPS sized for the switch alone will not carry a fully loaded PoE installation. Outdoor PoE installations, such as cameras on a building perimeter, add the same chain logic that applies to CCTV: cameras, switch, recorder, and router together, with the switch as the PoE source in the middle.
